Quarterback, quarterback, quarterback, it’s the most glorified position in all of sports. When you have a good one, all the talk is about how great they are, when you have a bad one, all the talk is about how terrible they are, when you don’t necessarily have solidified starter, all the talk is about who it’s going to be.
As you know, the Broncos are in the third category, so when head coach Gary Kubiak was made available to media Thursday morning at the Boy Scouts of America Sports Breakfast at Pepsi Center in Denver, the vast majority of the questions were focused on the signal callers.
“We need to stay focused on the guys on our team right now,” Kubiak told of the position. “We’re very excited about Mark [Sanchez] and we know those guys are up there throwing in California, so that’s exciting. Trevor [Siemian] is a fine young player, so we’re focused on those two and getting ready to go here in a couple weeks.
“Obviously we’ve got some work to do,” he admitted. “We understand that. [Executive Vice President of Football Operations/GM] John [Elway] right now, [Director of Player Personnel] Matt [Russell], are working on the draft and getting ready for that. We’ve got about three weeks here. Just staying very focused on our football team and with what we have right now. Trying to add to it in about three weeks.”ubi
As talks have seemingly slowed down in terms of a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for veteran QB Colin Kaepernick, focus outside of the team has begun to shift a bit towards the upcoming NFL Draft as a place where the Broncos could add a body to their quarterback room.
“I think it’s a good group of guys,” the head coach said of the QB class. “How they get sorted out, you never know. You hear different things every day. You watch different workouts every day. I guess [University of Memphis QB] Paxton [Lynch] worked out yesterday. It’s a good group. We’ll do our work on all of them. Hopefully when we want to come out of the draft, we’ll be a better football team at a lot of positions, not just quarterback.”
And Kubiak did his best to make sure folks don’t rule out the two quarterbacks on the roster now as potential starters come fall.
“I feel good about the two guys that we have. We’ll see what happens,” he said. “Generally you continue to move forward and try to get better. I’m going to stay focused on Mark and Trevor right now, and doing everything I can to get ready for this draft right now… I will say this: Mark has a lot of background in our system. I think we’ll make up ground very quickly.
“Trevor is a young player who made up a lot of ground last year,” Kubiak added. “Obviously we think a lot of him. This is going to be a big step for him. If a guy makes a big jump, he usually makes it from Year one to two. Trevor will know what he’s doing when he walks in here in April. It will be up to him. We’ll see, but I think our football team has a lot of confidence in him. l know I do. I know he’s got the talent to do it. We’ll see what happens.”
As the Broncos move forward at the position, one thing is for certain—they will be adding at least one more signal caller to the group. But the question remains to be—who will it be?
