Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Jon Gray has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right foot and will miss at least the next month before being evaluated by the team.
Gray had pitched in just three games and was throwing a one-hit shutout against the San Francisco Giants when he appeared to re-aggravate a toe injury he sustained during spring training. Manager Bud Black says the two may or may not be related but that the stress fracture is in a different place.
This news is another punch to the gut for a team already missing key players in Ian Desmond, David Dahl, and Tom Murphy. Gray was arguably the most indispensable member of the team, including Nolan Arenado.
In the short-term, the Colorado Rockies have called up Shane Carle and announced that Chris Rusin will get at least one spot start next week against the Los Angeles Dodger.
“He’ll be back. He’ll be back hopefully relatively soon,” said Bud Black. “He’ll be able to play catch, do all of his upper body stuff … he’ll have to make some starts in the minor leagues.”
