Jon Gray leaves game with left foot soreness

Colorado Rockies ace Jon Gray exited today’s spring training game against the San Francisco Giants in the top of the third with a sore left foot. Fans may have been looking for the panic button as he left the mound, but as of now, this is nothing to be overly concerned about.

It should also be noted that his left foot is not the one he uses to push of the mound, and any kind of soreness to a pitcher push off foot is much worse than for the landing foot.

Gray had given up five runs on seven consecutive hits in the inning before calling for trainer Scott Gehret and apparently taking himself out of the game. Before that, he was sitting on 96 mph and touching 98 mph with the fastball. He had set down the first seven batters with relative ease before the troubles started.

Gray had been pitching well this spring coming into today’s game, but left it with an ERA that ballooned up to 4.11. Still, the most important news here is that Gray is still in the Rockies rotation come Opening Day.

There will almost certainly be a follow up MRI, stay with us as the story develops.
