Jameer Nelson to hold week-long team workout in Philadelphia

General manager and executive vice president of basketball operations, Tim Connelly went on Mile High Sports Radio with Gil Whiteley to discuss the Nuggets offseason, their needs at shooting and gave some intel on a week-long “workout” veteran guard Jammer Nelson is holding in Philadelphia for the entire roster.

Nelson, a native of Chester, Pennsylvania, signed a new free-agent deal with Denver this offseason and enjoyed a four-year career at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia where he won both the Wooden and Naismith awards as senior.

“Next week Jameer on his own dime is flying all of our players that aren’t participating in the European championships to Philadelphia to work out for one week and he pays for everything,” Connelly said. “Every day they have a different activity, one night it might be a Phillies game another day it might be paintballing. He’s a unique guy in that regard that he embraces it and I think his impact will be huge on the court. But to have a guy do that on his own accord out of his own checkbook is pretty impressive and kind of speaks to what type of person he is.”

Nelson’s leadership is an encouraging sign for a team who struggled in that department for much of the last two years and the “culture shift” I have been preaching about for the past few weeks is continuing to evolve and take shape.

These workouts are becoming more and more popular leading up to the mini-camp and it is satisfying to see the Nuggets get on board with the idea. John Wall and Anthony Davis are both holding “player-run mini-camps” this week as well.

Connelly also touched on the trade rumors leading up to the draft regarding former point guard Ty Lawson and the Sacramento Kings and if Denver would do anything to address their need at shooting guard before the season.

“We made a bunch of calls during prior and right after the draft, pretty aggressively trying to add some pieces we liked,” Connelly said. “Now given the market, were not overly impressed with the names we could potentially get we don’t want to make a move to make a move.”
