Running back Jamaal Charles is scheduled to visit the Broncos on Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter. The veteran running back was released by the Kansas City Chiefs on February 28. Charles was placed on injured reserve last November after needing a second surgery on his knee in the middle of last season.

The former third-round pick in 2008 was once one of the best running backs and playmakers in the league, specifically against the Broncos. Charles is a four-time Pro Bowl player (2010, 2012-2014) including two nods as a First-team All Pro (2010, 2013).

However, Charles has struggled with injuries the past two seasons. In the past two years combined, Charles has played in eight total games with five starts due to an ACL injury that later needed a second surgery to continue to fix it.

The news comes less than two days after Denver wrapped up the 2017 NFL Draft when the team addressed the running back position, but not until the sixth-round with the selection of De’Angelo Henderson. If the Broncos and Charles agree to a contract, either on Tuesday or in the future, he would join a backfield with C.J. Anderson, Devontae Booker, Juwan Thompson, Bernard Pierce and Henderson.

The 30-year old is viewed as a low-risk, high-reward player if he can stay healthy as he has five-1,000 yard rushing seasons. According to Schefter, Denver is “enthused” about bringing in the former All Pro.

A major emphasis from the Broncos brass this offseason has been about adding more horsepower and playmaking ability on offense. If healthy, Charles has proven that he has that ability.
