Welcome Jamie Bryant, Ram Nation.
Bryant was hired on Wednesday morning by Colorado State Rams football and brought into Fort Collins by head coach Mike Bobo to be the green and gold’s newest special teams coordinator.
Bryant takes over for Jeff Hammerschmidt, who coached the special teams unit the last four seasons in Fort Fun. Hammerschmidt was hired away by the New York Jets of the NFL earlier in the month, which is a loss because he had that phase of the game excelling in 2014 and 2015.
Now it’s Bryant’s turn.
I’m excited to announce Jamie Bryant as the newest member to our coaching staff,” Bobo said in a press release. “Jamie brings more than 20 years of experience as a defensive assistant, defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator.”
Bryant brings a ton of experience to his new position with CSU; two decades, actually.
Most recently, he was with Delaware State in 2015 as the defensive coordinator. He held the same position in 2014 with Youngstown State. The previous year, Bryant was the Penguins’ special teams coordinator. Rewind further and Bryant served as defensive coordinator at Houston in 2012, the linebackers coach for them in 2011.
Then from 2002-10, Bryant coached with Vanderbilt, as the team’s secondary coach, two of those years as defensive coordinator and one as ST coordinator. In 2008, Vandy won the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, the school’s first bowl victory in 53 years. His coaching career began in the mid-90s as East Clinton High School’s head coach in Ohio.
“This is a great opportunity, and I’m excited to be part of the Rams family,” Bryant said via the release.
There have been multiple shakeups on the coaching staff already this offseason. First, Tyson Summers left to head coach Georgia Southern, which Bobo said, “I hated to lose Tyson Summers.” Then, Marty English — who coached the linebackers before his promotion — was moved up to defensive coordinator.
Then, on Feb. 5, Hammershmidt was hired away to the NFL. That left this void, as well as a coaching void with the safeties. Likely, Bryant will take over the safeties and English will head up the linebackers.
But, no official word on this yet from Bobo.
