Colorado Rockies outfielder Ian Desmond was removed from the game against the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth inning on Tuesday night, re-injuring his calf.
Desmond was placed on the Disabled List before the final two series before the All-Star break with a strained right calf. He told BSN Denver on that day he was “not happy” with the decision but it appears as though the caution was both necessary and possibly not enough. Of course, this could have been a fluky reaggravation and we do not know at this time whether or not Desmond will need to be placed back on the Disabled List or simply sit out a day or two.
If the injury does require a roster move, Colorado could either call Raimel Tapia back up from Triple-A to resume his role in the outfield or they could get creative and use this as an excuse to call up the still-absurdly-hot Ryan McMahon. The ever-improving Jordan Patterson could also be in the mix.
Mark Reynolds stepped into Desmond’s place immediately at first base.
Desmond is batting .286/.330/.390 on the season splitting time between left field and first base in the first year of a five-year, $70 million contract.
