Ian Desmond leaves game early, Rockies testing outfield depth

The Colorado Rockies biggest free-agent signing of the offseason left Sunday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a lower body injury.

Ian Desmond was playing left field and it appears his right leg was injured while making this catch.

Desmond signed for five years and $70 million this winter and is slashing .283/.315/.388 in his first season with the Rockies. He has been playing left field mostly but was signed as a first baseman. Desmond has added five homers and 26 RBI along with 10 stolen bases this season after missing the first month with a broken hand.

As of this second, the Rockies have three outfielders hurt, Carlos Gonzalez is coming off the DL tomorrow after spending the minimum 10 days on it. Gerardo Parra is on the shelf too and he is expected to make three rehab appearances for the Triple-A Isotopes this week.

But for Sunday’s game, the Rockies are down to Mike Tauchman and Ramiel Tapia holding down the corners. Aside from catchers Jordan Patterson is the only non-injured position player on the 40-man roster that is not in the bigs.
