Scottsdale, Ariz. — In Sunday’s spring training contest against the Cincinatti Reds, Colorado Rockies first baseman, and major offseason acquisition Ian Desmond, was removed from the game after being struck by a pitch, a preliminary X-Ray taken immediately revealed a fracture in his left hand.

Desmond, was brought in for five years and 70 million dollars to play first base. And pretty much every part of that sentence has sparked controversy in Colorado. The most immediate impact of him missing time, of course, is that it robs Desmond of a much-needed opportunity to grow in his comfort level at his new position.

Should the injury prevent him from making the Opening Day roster, Mark Reynolds, Stephen Cardullo, and Jordan Patterson will likely be called upon early in the season.

He is set to have a further evaluation tomorrow. At this time, the timetable for his return is unknown but it seems unlikely he will see any more time this spring training.

We will have more as the story develops.
