As our Ryan Koenigsberg reported, Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch looked like himself on Sunday at training camp, especially on downfield throws. But as he works towards becoming an NFL QB, the coaching staff is looking for more than just tight spirals and deep bombs; they’re concerned with how the young QB is processing the offense.

“He’s just better every day,” said head coach Gary Kubiak. “Every day we’re out here, he tends to make some big plays and do some good things. He struggles at times, but you are just seeing a guy get more and more confident. That’s part of being a young player.”

“It’s a comfort zone. When you call the same play over and over again you start to get a little more comfortable,” Kubiak added of the improvements he saw in Lynch today. “He is studying really hard. He is probably the first kid here in the morning because he has all these extra meetings compared to the other guys. His talent is showing up every day, and the other stuff is getting better.”

Paxton’s work ethic has stood out to Offensive Coordinator Rick Dennison as well,  “He’s working hard. It’s taking all the reps he can and all the mental reps he can. He’s learning from film and learning what he does right and what he does wrong and what other people do right and wrong.”

While Lynch is putting in the hours and starting to progress with time in the offense, it’s his physical tools that have put him in this situation.

“He’s got a big arm. He’s an athletic guy,” continued Dennison. “It’s unusual to see someone that big run that well. He runs pretty well. He can handle what we are doing. It’s just a matter of teaching him everything and making sure he grasps every concept we are trying to get to. He’s coming along.”

Lynch’s big arm, big frame, and impressive athleticism have always seemed to match the Broncos offensive scheme to perfection. The question since he arrived has been how Lynch would adjust to everything the pro game would throw his way. These improvements are key for the franchise’s long-term success.

For now, on a day when many of the stars were held out, Lynch shining along with other young players on the team is extremely encouraging for the Super Bowl Champions future.
