ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The wait for Drew Lock will go on for another week.

Likely.

On Monday, after the Broncos’ inexplicable 27-23 loss to the Vikings, Vic Fangio detailed the plan for the talented rookie for his second week of practice after being on the injured reserve for the first half of the season.

“We’ll continue what we did last week,” Fangio stated. “Get him reps, both on scout team and get him some reps with the offense and see how he’s progressing.”

The eight to ten team reps Lock was receiving per practice last week were “significant” because starting quarterbacks typically get 90 percent of the snaps during a practice. Lock’s share was roughly 25 percent as a player technically not even on the active roster.

Despite receiving significant snaps in practice this week, Fangio said it’s “unlikely” Lock will be the team’s backup quarterback on Sunday, but it is “possible.”

“We’ll just see how he’s doing and when we think he’s ready to possibly be the backup and that would be the next step,” the head coach said earlier in the day during an interview on KOA.

If the team truly is set on Lock being the backup for at least a game before he starts, this would also push back any chance of him starting by an additional week as well.

If Brett Rypien is the backup on Sunday, which Fangio indicated, and Lock has to be the backup for at least one game, which the head coach also pointed to, the earliest Lock would be the Broncos’ starting quarterback is Week 14.

While it is unlikely, it’s still a possibility Lock’s called up before Sunday’s game in Buffalo. In fact, on Monday, Fangio stated “it’s a fluid situation.”

With Andy Janovich’s season over due to dislocating his elbow on Sunday, and his replacement Andrew Beck already on the 53-man roster, there’s already an open roster spot for Lock to seamlessly take.

However, Fangio wrote that off, saying the team’s “probably going to need that spot for other positions,” adding there’s “not yet” a chance he could even be activated to the 53-man roster off the injured reserve this week.

The Broncos don’t have to make a decision on Lock until Week 14. On that Tuesday, leading up to their game against Houston, Lock’s 21-day practice window will expire, which will force the team to make a decision to leave him on the injured reserve or activate him to the roster. But the team can make that decision any time before then, too.

The Lock clock continues to tick. On Monday, Fangio didn’t give hope of it coming to an end any time soon.
