ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Brandon Allen’s NFL debut on Sunday statistically resembled that of Peyton Manning’s debut in Orange & Blue in 2012.
The future Hall of Famer tossed 253 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a magnificent passer rating of 129.2. On Sunday, taking his first-ever NFL snaps, Allen threw for 193 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 125.6 passer rating.
However, unlike Manning, Vic Fangio isn’t ready to put Allen into Canton just yet. In fact, there were plenty of areas the former sixth-round pick could improve.
Allen admitted after his first win Courtland Sutton bailed him out of some dicey throws he made, including the “pretty terrible” pass to the 6-foot-4 receiver that resulted in a touchdown.
Fangio added to the critique, pointing to Allen’s poor throw in the red zone. Additionally, there were numerous off-target passes and at times Allen looked extremely uneasy in the pocket, including tucking into a self-sack seconds before pressure actually was threatening.
But the 125.6 passer rating, along with a rejuvenated Broncos’ offense and a dub, showed the Broncos enough to roll with Allen for another week. Or make that two on the calendar.
“I think another week of practice will do him wonders, which we’ll do when we get back from the bye,” Fangio stated, giving hope this could just be a starting point for Allen. “Now he’s getting an opportunity to practice more. Just practice I think will produce the improvements we’re looking for.”
Not only will Allen get his second full week of practice with the first-team offense when the team returns from the bye, but he’ll also get an extra practice that week since the team won’t be coming off a game.
Although Fangio had constructive criticism for Allen after the game, there aren’t any major flaws he wants to see improved.
“Just to continue to operate the offense,” Fangio said when asked what he wants Allen to work on. “He’s at the point where he knows our offense, he’s been in our meetings since he’s gotten here, didn’t get here until after preseason was over.”
As for Drew Lock, before Sunday’s win, the Broncos were eyeing the second-round pick to return to the practice field after the team’s bye week.
However, Fangio backtracked that idea to an extent on Monday.
“It’s still up in the air,” Fangio said when asked if Lock would return to the practice field leading up to the team’s Week 11 game versus the Vikings. “Since we’re not practicing this week, we don’t have to make a decision until next week.”
Lock will remain on the injured reserve through the team’s bye. Now it appears there’s no guarantee he’ll be practicing when the team reconvenes from their week off. For now, it remains the Brandon Allen show.
