The Colorado Rockies will be without their closer for a few days as Greg Holland has been placed on paternity leave. Holland is expected to return to the club Sunday, according to our sources.
In other news, Tyler Chatwood has returned to the club from the disabled list and has joined the bullpen, according to today’s lineup card. The lineup also has Ian Desmond on the bench, meaning the Rockies don’t think, at least for now, he will need a DL stint.
Colorado has already lost the first two games of this six-game road trip against St. Louis and now won’t have their best reliever until the final game. They will need to rely on someone else to finish the Cards’ series and close the first two games of the following series, at Washington. The day off on Thursday helps Holland get a little extra time with his family without missing more games.
The Rockies will likely platoon Jake McGee, maybe with Adam Ottavino, Mike Dunn or even Chris Rusin. They were already in need of bullpen help, so it should not be seen as a reaction to this brief time off if the Rockies make a trade for a reliever soon.
