Colorado Rockies closer Greg Holland has been named the NL Reliever of the Month for April. He collected 11 saves in his first 11 attempts setting a new franchise record for consecutive saves to begin a season. Over 12 innings, Holland allowed just two earned runs, walked five and struck out 13. He’s sporting a very good 1.00 WHIP.
BSN Denver first reported the Rockies interest in Holland in December, stating, “He has the talent and the pedigree to be as good as any of the relief pitchers who have been signed in free agency this offseason.” So far, Holland has fulfilled the promise of that talent and pedigree, leading all of MLB in saves.
The acquisition of Holland was a major part of GM Jeff Bridich’s focus on the bullpen this offseason that has turned one of the worst bullpens in the NL to one of the best. That focus also included adding Mike Dunn, who is expected to rejoin the team today. Dunn recently told us something that has become a kind of mantra for this team that now has two pitchers winning awards today; “Pick up your teammates, no matter what.”
