Gary Kubiak opens up about adding his son to the Broncos' staff

The turnover on the Denver Broncos roster since hoisting the Vince Lombardi trophy has been prevalent. Their top two quarterbacks, a starting defensive end, a starting linebacker and multiple starters on the offensive line will not be wearing Orange & Blue next season for various reasons. The guys on the sideline, though, Gary Kubiak and his staff, have stayed almost completely intact — just one addition and one subtraction.

The subtraction — Brian Callahan, headed to the Lions where he moves from offensive assistant to quarterbacks coach. His replacement — Klint Kubiak — formerly of the University of Kansas, the Minnesota Vikings and Texas A&M University and, yes, the son of Gary.

Any time you hire somebody within your own family there will be questions of nepotism, but when asked last week about the hire, Kubiak was adamant that Klint has earned his stripes.

“I think anytime, as a coach, there are some [reservations in hiring your kid],” Kubiak admitted. “I told my kid when he wanted to be a coach in this league to go out there and make your way. I think he worked really hard. He was at A&M for three years, with the Vikings a couple of years and Kansas last year, so he’s been a little bit of everywhere. I’ve been impressed with the job that he’s done and how far he’s come. I know he’ll do a really good job for us.”

Klint went out and did his thing at different spots in the country, coaching mostly wide receivers, while serving as a quality control assistant for both the Aggies and the Vikings, and eventually earning Gary’s blessing when the spot opened up on his staff. And Klint actually isn’t the first Kubiak ‘kid’ on the staff.

Klein Kubiak is serving as a scouting assistant for the Broncos.

“I’ll actually get to see this one (Klint). I don’t get to see the little one (Klein) very much. John has got him on the road,” the head coach explained. “He’s out on the road. He’s in the south. I don’t know exactly where he’s going, but I know he’s on the road somewhere. It’s pretty cool. I didn’t know if I’d ever get to that point, but he’s been out there battling for the last seven years. I’m excited about the coach that he has the chance to be in this field and getting to work with ‘Knapper’ (Quarterbacks Coach Greg Knapp). It is nice to walk down the hall and say hello to him for a chance. I haven’t seen him much.”

Gary Kubiak provides himself on creating a family atmosphere within his football club, suppose he couldn’t think of a better way to fill a void on his staff than with some actual, qualified family.
