Garrett Grayson: The top male athlete in the Mountain West for 2014-15.

Grayson, the former quarterback of Colorado State Rams football, was announced as the conference’s Male Athlete of the Year on Tuesday, the same day his former teammate Rashard Higgins was named Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

The senior quarterback was responsible for pushing the Rams to one of their most productive offensive outputs over a season in years, as well as earning a national ranking for the first time since 2003. Many of Grayson’s impressive passing numbers ranked in the top 10 nationally, including his 4,006 passing yards (fourth), passing efficiency of 166.2 (fifth), passing yards per game of 308.2 (seventh) and 32 touchdowns (eighth). All of that production led to Colorado State single-season and career records in every category as well as an All-Mountain West first-team selection.

Simply, he was the greatest quarterback CSU has ever seen, statistically speaking, evolving into a pocket passer and leading his team to two straight bowl berths.

Grayson has since graduated from Colorado State and NCAA football to the NFL, being drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the third round in May. He’ll back up and learn from Drew Brees for the time being but signs point to him being their next quarterback, eventually.

Garrett Grayson was Colorado State University’s second-ever recipient of the MW Athlete of the Year Award, with Volleyball’s Danielle Minch winning the Female Award in 2010-11.
