September 7, 2019 – Colorado 34, #25 Nebraska 31

For the first three quarters, this was shaping up to be one of the most embarrassing afternoons in CU history. A horde of Nebraska fans invaded Folsom Field, and they were the only ones cheering for the first 40 minutes of the game as the Huskers led 17-0 late in the third quarter. Then the Buffs staged a shocking comeback – scoring 31 points in the final 17 minutes of regulation.

Seven of those points came on the longest play from scrimmage in school history – when Steven Montez hit KD Nixon on a daring flea flicker that went for 96 yards early in the fourth quarter. After Tony Brown hauled in the game-tying score in the back corner of the south end zone with 46 seconds remaining, it was hard not to see the parallels with the insane 1999 Nebraska game, when CU came back from being down 27-3 only to lose in overtime.

The Buffs had the ball first in OT and settled for a field goal – just as they had in 1999. Two decades later, a different ending was in store. Mustafa Johnson came up with a huge third down sack of Adrian Martinez to force the Huskers into a long field goal attempt – using their punter, who had been pressed into service due to injury. The kick missed by a mile, and the student section stormed the field to wish the dejected sea of red on the other side of the field a safe journey home.
