EXCLUSIVE: Details from CU Buffs 'closed door' scrimmage with Boise State

Every year college basketball programs around the country participate in “closed door”or “secret” scrimmages with peer universities as a bit of a preseason test for their squad. The schools are not allowed to publicly release any information regarding the scrimmages.

So, don’t tell anyone, because it’s supposed to be a secret, but Colorado took on Boise State in Boulder this past weekend, and while you won’t hear Tad Boyle making any comments about the matchup, sources told BSN Denver of some very encouraging early signs that came out of the preseason tuneup.

Here’s what we were able to gather:

  • The Buffs were in control most of the way, powered by a stout defensive performance.
  • CU ended up winning by six, although they were “up by 15 most of the scrimmage.” (*cough* TadBall)
  • Senior forward Josh Scott was “clearly the best player” on the floor.
  • Sophomore Tory Miller had a strong showing and is said to be “much improved.”
  • Senior guard Xavier Talton had a very solid showing. One source said he “outplayed” sophomore Dom Collier.

On the surface, that’s an extremely positive report. Defense, “J40” dominance and a win over a 2015 tournament team should be music to Buffs fan’s ears. Obviously there’s two ways to look Talton/Collier bit, but it would be a very good thing for the Buffs if they can get solid contributions from Talton this season, after he had a bit of a junior slump last year.

However you want to look at it, one thing is for sure, basketball season is upon us.

Colorado will host its basketball media day today (Wednesday, 10/21) and as always we will be all over the coverage – including some fun video features similar to what we did on football media day. The event, which will begin around 9:30 AM, will serve as a jumping off point for our full coverage of the 2015-16 Buffaloes.
