Elway sheds light on Broncos quarterback situation

From an outside perspective, it looks like the Denver Broncos are scrambling a bit from a quarterback standpoint. Brock Osweiler, the apparent “Plan A” bolted to the Houston Texans, with reports surfacing that he was done in Denver the minute the was benched in Week 17 and reports of interest in Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin, potentially plans “B” and “C,” have yet to yield any fruit.

Not knowing who is going to quarterback the Broncos in their title defense has the Orange & Blue faithful starting to get restless and many are hoping that recent signing Mark Sanchez isn’t “Plan D.”

On Tuesday, during a conference call following the signing of C.J. Anderson, Broncos general manager and vice president of football operations, John Elway shed a bit of light on the plan at QB.

“I think we’re excited about having Mark [Sanchez]. His track record and what he’s done, I think that he’s very capable,” he said. “He’s the first step in the process. With Brock, we went through that process and ultimately it came down to what Brock wanted to do and he made that decision of what he thought was best for him, which was Houston. We respect that and we’ll move on and continue to put the best team we can together.”

Elway has stood by that phrase, “First step in the process,” stating it multiple times since the Sanchez signing but that doesn’t do much to quell the curiosity about what step two, three, four or however many steps there may be to get the Broncos a signal caller they can be confident in. A quick look at the Broncos cap space shows them to have around $5 million to work with after the signing of Anderson, not much, to say the least.

Elway, though, alluded to that not mattering much.

“Like I said, it always stays fluid. You never know where it’s going to be,” he explained of the situation. “You can try to plan all you want the way you want it to go, but that’s not what happens. Obviously with some of the players that we had leaving, it has opened up some other areas for us as far as different players and what we can do as well as money, too. We’ll continue to look at different options.”

Without tipping his hand, it seems Elway is doing his best to let Broncos fans know he still has a plan.
