Just a few months removed from being optioned to Triple-A to work out some kinks and find the consistency necessary to compete, the Colorado Rockies have recalled Eddie Butler Tuesday afternoon.
Butler struggled mightily in his stint with the Rockies earlier this season, compiling of record of 2-5 with an abysmal earned run average of 6.96. The once second overall prospect in Colorado’s farm system, right behind Jon Gray, has been hampered by his inability to miss bats, thus creating more run scoring opportunities for the opposing teams.
In his 12 appearances in a Rockies’ uniform this season, Butler has struck out just 36 batters in 54.1 innings pitched, while opponents are hitting at a .320 clip. Not exactly ideal from a player who was thought to be a staple in the rotation for years to come.
However, in Triple-A Albuquerque, Butler has put up much better statistics yet the main concern is his ability to get the swing and miss type stuff. In 15 starts with the Isotopes, Butler finished the season with an 8-3 record, holding the opposition to a batting average of .267. The strikeout numbers were still fairly low, striking out just 35 batters in 89.0 innings pitched, yet Butler managed to post an ERA of 4.45, lowering his WHIP from 1.58 with Colorado, to 1.34 with Albuquerque.
