The Denver Broncos started the Sean Payton era with a very disappointing 0-2 record. Who is most to blame for the Broncos’ slow start? Is it Sean Payton himself? Is it Russell Wilson, or is the quarterback actually a bright spot? What about the rest of the offense including Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton and Javonte Williams?

Or is it the Broncos’ defense led by Vance Joseph that gave up 35 points on Sunday against the Washington Commanders? Justin Simmons, Kareem Jackson or Randy Gregory? Or is it something else?

How correctable are those issues with the Broncos? Is this something that can be corrected in Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins?

On the DNVR Broncos Podcast, Super Bowl 50 Champion Todd Davis, Zac Stevens and Henry Chisholm are coming to you LIVE from the DNVR Bar to break down all of the latest news in Broncos Country.

Zac Stevens was born and raised in Denver, went to the University of Denver and now covers the Denver Broncos. After graduating Summa Cum Laude from DU in 2014, Zac worked for the Cleveland Browns as a remote scout. He then jumped straight into the journalism industry at the beginning of 2016 covering the reigning world-champion Broncos and joined DNVR soon after. 1. I decided to not post this last week in hopes that it was week one jitters but unfortunately we are 0-2.

In past seasons I’ve believed we’ve had good teams that have underperformed. This is the first year where it feels like we just do not have the players. At what point do we need to be honest with ourselves and say we don’t have the guys. For example, Courtland is no longer a young promising WR. He is who he is. And who he is, is a guy who get’s 4 catches for 50 yards and can make a nice deep ball play every once in a while. On the defense have have Pat and Justin. But 2 players a defense does not make. I agree with what Todd said last week, at some point players have to make plays. But what if you don’t have players that can make plays?

Time to blow it up and start over with Sean and Walmart.

    • I agree to an extent, i commented something similar last year where we were carrying over so many players from mediocre squads expecting a different result…madness is trying the same thing over and over again expecting something different. We should have moved on from Glasgow, Bolles, Cush loooong loong time ago. Try drafting young or FAs and try and develop them instead of trying to fix an existing player year after year.

  2. Great pod today guys! I just have a couple of comments that I want to get your opinions on. The talk of Wilson not being able to communicate plays, doesn’t that also go to coaching? Pete Carroll and his numerous OC’s got the job done at a very high level for a number of years. Can’t have been all RBs and TEs running in with plays from sideline… Not trying to wipe away any stains from Wilson but my god this guy was a HoFer until he got to Denver.
Another thing is, does Wilson not work well high established or high round pick WRs? Lockett, Kearse, Baldwin were all low round or undrafted. I see johnson, and humphreys having success now. Does having that chip on your shoulder really carry over to wanting to have more success? Baldwin, Lockett and Kearse were all immense WRs that never gave up on plays, the amount of times Wilson found them on extended plays led to plenty of success. Meanwhile Paul Richardson, Jimmy Graham never quite worked out..DK is an outlier i think.

  3. My boys! Our season is not over yet. But what happened with our oline after the first quarter? They where letting Washingtons dline in Russ’s face all game. I get it the pick was his fault but the fumble should have been called back and watching his reaction on the play he looked like he thought it was going to come back, but all these couch qbs and uncle Rico’s need to stop watching these games with there blinders on. Russ had over 300 yards total and 3tds and is on track to have over 40 tds this season if he keeps his current projection. What happened to our defense? Bend don’t break? More like bend until snap. You all did the blame game I personally agree with RK and blame the coach who started this loosing culture in this great organization VJ. He did nothing when it comes to adjusting to the other teams offense. I get players love him as a coach but I’m tired of him letting the other teams offenses beat us with these short underneath passes and not doing anything to fix it. This is also what makes it so we can not get the defense off the field until the other team gets points. Something with the defense has to change! Also with the k jack issues why is it the defensive players to take care of the other team to a point the other team’s receivers don’t have to take care of themselves? His job is to make sure the other team doesn’t score and get mad at Zac. After rewatching the hit it definitely looks like that was his shoulder that got him. Also why are we being flagged for these bad calls when we can’t get legit calls that actually happen. And yea I know we shouldn’t let the refs decide a game but unfortunately it’s happening. Now that I’m done with the negativity something positive, I will say that Sean Payton’s offense brings me hope. People need to open there eyes because we finally scored more then 30 points! Also TODD THE GREAT needs to show these guys how to rap up and stop this arm talking. You guys always do a great job and sorry for the long rant. I promise when we win I won’t rant like this. Also most importantly GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  4. Sean Payton is a very smart football coach. He knew this team wasn’t quite ready so he set up some fall guys. The offense doesn’t perform? Everyone blames Russ. Defense doesn’t perform? Everyone knew VJ wasn’t the guy. Everything works? Payton is so smart and turned the team around. Sean Payton calculated this out and it was actually pretty genius. We just lost to 2 of the worst franchises in the league and I can’t help feel but the season is lost already and we’re not lucky enough to get the #1 pick. Long tough road ahead.

  5. Onion Tears Bronco

(Redacted from September 18, 2023) Tears and nausea are my existence now. I suppose Sean Payton needs to relearn how to win… If we can get out to leads, should we resort to playing not to lose football from there? Like hockey teams tighten up their defense and scoring for the opponent becomes an agonizing task. Next time, perhaps we run the ball and have Russ only throw quick game passes and bootlegs. Yesterday was that quicksand phenomenon Shane Falco spoke of in The Replacements. All too real for us BroncoLanders.

Also, should we outlaw the Russ to Courtland connection? It seems like it never goes well. The miscommunication on the interception. Not converting passes on the goal line. (Thank goodness there was no helmet throwing this time…) Are they destined to forever be incompatible?

    In love & sadness,
    Onion Tears Bronco

  6. Hey guys
Gene Steratore tweeted the refs should’ve called the DPI on the 2 point conversion. Refs also missed the face mask on Russ. Can the league fine itself?

  7. I still think that the main factor is players executing properly on their assignments, given the reactions that we saw from Vance and Sean when the cameras cut to the sideline. Vance especially looked frustrated, as though some players were in the wrong spots.
Maybe getting some rookies in there will actually help? They have extra motivation to not mess up.
In the meantime, I guess I’ll have to switch jerseys for the game again until I figure out which one is lucky.
