DENVER — He didn’t play today, but regardless of how anyone feels about that, DJ LeMahieu has officially ended the 2016 season with the highest batting average in the National League, earning him the coveted batting title.
This is the tenth time the Rockies have come away with the award, LeMahieu is the seventh player from Colorado to win it, with Larry Walker accomplishing the feat three times.
LeMahieu finished with a .348 batting average, narrowly edging out Daniel Murphy (.347) of the Washington Nationals who sat out the last week-and-a-half of the season.
“He has the best two-strike approach in the game right now,” says manager Walt Weiss, and LeMahieu has ridden that approach from being seen as a glove-only guy to the National League’s batting champion.
