DENVER — After scoring a team-high 15 points in the loss to Michigan in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last week, Dischon Thomas has elected to enter the transfer portal.

The news was first reported by Verbal Commits on Wednesday afternoon and was later confirmed to DNVR by an inside source from the program.

According to those in the know, the Colorado State staff was caught off guard by the news and expected to have Thomas back for the 2022-23 season. Alas, while it is not guaranteed that ‘DT’ will be gone, his days in the Green & Gold may be numbered.

Thomas played in 31 games this season, averaging 5.7 points and 3.1 rebounds in about 16 minutes per contest. He has not produced a ton in the paint, despite often playing the five for the Rams, his abilities as a 3-point shooter have been big for the offense over the years, though. For his career, Thomas is a 42-percent shooter from beyond the arc, and he’s shot north of 40 percent from 3-point range in all three of his collegiate seasons.

In the loss to Michigan, Thomas tied his career-high with five made threes against the Wolverines. The 6-foot-9 junior forward also hit five from deep in the win over Creighton at the Paradise Jam back in November.

Assuming Thomas does actually leave the program this offseason, it will be interesting to see how the staff manages the roster. The Rams clearly could use another big in the mix but depending on what happens with the seniors, Kendle Moore and Adam Thistlewood, the Rams may end up needing some help at the two and three as well. Obviously, the depth will also be greatly dependent on David Roddy choosing to run it back too, but at this point I expect him to return for a senior campaign.

As long as the Rams can return the majority of the team in 2022-23, CSU should still be an extremely dangerous team. Adding a few key pieces from the transfer market could make them even more lethal too. We’ll just have to see how it all plays out.

Finally, if this is the end of Thomas in a Rams uniform, I’ll certainly miss covering him at Moby Arena. I’m sure that Ram Nation will wish him and his family well too, no matter where their journey takes them next. The impact of all of the guys that came in over the last four years can never be understated. They truly helped transform CSU men’s basketball and bring back Moby Madness.
