Seven in a row.
After getting pummeled by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday Night, the Colorado Rockies have now lost seven straight baseball games.
The Rockies offense did their part against one of the best starting pitchers in the National League, plating an impressive six runs against fireballer Walker Buehler over the course of five innings.
Even still, the game was never in doubt for the Dodgers who scored early and often in a runaway 16-9 victory.
Things began with optimism for Colorado when Trevor Story led off the game with his 30th home run of the season. They made it 2-0 on doubles from Charlie Blackmon and Daniel Murphy, but that lead was quickly erased in the bottom half of the inning when Joc Pederson added his own leadoff homer and singles from Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger, and Chris Taylor tied the game.
Los Angeles jumped all over Lambert in the second with a wide array of base hits. Rookie Gavin Lux and Buehler singled, Pederson and A.J. Pollock doubled, and Matt Beaty added one more single to give the home team a 6-2 advantage.
And they weren’t done.
The Rockies did plate a pair of runs on another double for Blackmon and Nolan Arenado’s 36th home run of the season, but the small two-run deficit lasted only a matter of minutes.
Yency Almonte entered in just the third inning to try to restore order but it was more of the same. A double from Lux, a walk to Buehler, and Pederson’s 30th home run of the season made it 9-4 in favor of the Boys in Blue.
Taylor’s 10th longball of the year extended their lead by another run in the fourth before the Colorado offense made another run at Buehler.
Yonder Alonso led off with a double to right and Story singled through the left side. Blackmon got a sacrifice fly and Murphy’s second double of the game made it 10-6.
But even that little bit of momentum could not sustain.
The Dodgers responded by blasting Jesus Tinoco for another four runs in the fifth that began with a walk from David Freese and a single by Enrique Hernandez. Beaty blasted a homer to right-center, Will Smith walked, and a fielder’s choice set up a three-run shot for Seager to put the game way out of reach at 14-6.
Jake McGee coughed up two more runs in the seventh on back-to-back homers by Bellinger and Taylor.
Out of options on the first game of a road trip, Bud Black turned to position player Ian Desmond for the final three out. Somehow, he actually managed to pitch a scoreless eighth inning where he successfully touched 93 mph on the radar gun.
Dingers from Ryan McMahon and Desmond in the ninth made the final score 16-9.
