Denver Broncos tight end Vernon Davis explains what happened during crucial drop

With just under 4 minutes left to play, down by only 3 points, the Broncos were faced with a 4th and 5 from their own side of the field. Gary Kubiak said after the game that he wanted to shift the momentum in the game and that’s why he decided to go for it. The pressure came and Brock Osweiler delivered a low fast ball to Vernon Davis.

It wasn’t the most perfect pass that you’ve ever seen but it was delivered to the thigh area of a wide open, standing still, Vernon Davis, who subsequently allowed the ball to travel through his hands and ricochet off his leg. The Broncos would get another chance but the game would be defined by this play.

After the game an honest Vernon Davis stood in front of the media and said, “The ball was thrown; I got super excited because I knew I was going to be wide open. I took my eyes off the ball and wasn’t able to pull it in.” The play would have probably resulted in a big gain as nobody was near the veteran tight end.

Composed but bewildered, Davis added, “I should know better than that. I gotta get better as a player.”

Interestingly enough, Davis was on his way to his finest game since joining the Broncos, recording 7 catches for 74 yards. Had he caught that final pass, he would have ended the game with 8 catches and possibly 100+ yards with the game winning touchdown.

Vernon Davis told his teammates after the game that “Nobody is perfect” and “People make mistakes.” And he insists that this is just a speed bump. “We’re still a great team. I know that we’re going to overcome this. We’re going to get back to playing ball at a high level and play fast,” he said.

The Broncos have an opportunity to show that against the Steelers in Pittsburgh next Sunday.
