Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak loves to shop in Houston. For the second consecutive season, Kubiak and the Broncos welcome a former Texan tight end into the fold. Garrett Graham, 29, signed a one-year deal with the defending champions this afternoon, according to Ian Rapoport.
The former Wisconsin Badger was drafted in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft by the Texans, a team coached by Kubiak. Graham played five seasons in Houston and had his best year in 2013, catching 49 passes, accumulating 545 total yards and five touchdowns.
While under Kubiak, Graham shined and was poised to make an impact for the young franchise, but with a changing of the guard from Kubiak to current coach Bill O’Brien, Graham saw less and less playing time. After sliding down the depth chart, Graham only saw the field for a total of eight games last season.
Tight end was a position that had a certain level of concern after seasoned veteran Owen Daniels was released, adding another TE with some comfort with Kubiak and his system could prove beneficial in the long run. Graham will enter camp fighting for a roster spot and will have to beat out Virgil Green, Jeff Heuerman, and Richard Gordon.
Houston released Graham in March, so the signing will not affect any compensatory picks next year. Last year, the Daniels signing proved to work, time will tell if signing former Texan players could work out two years in a row.
