ENGLEWOOD — According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Denver Broncos and general manager John Elway have agreed on a five-year contract extension through 2021. The deal could not have come at a better time, with the start of training camp just three days away.
“We’re pleased to reach an agreement on a five-year contract with John to continue leading our football operations,” Broncos president and CEO Joe Ellis stated this afternoon in a team release. “During these last six seasons, John’s clearly established himself as one of the best general managers in all of sports. He’s demonstrated impressive football instincts, a strong business acumen and a consistent ability to build competitive teams.”
Ellis would go on to state “now, [we can] turn our full attention toward the 2017 season.”
Elway joined the front office in 2011 after an 8-8 season and has seen much success in his tenure: five AFC West titles, 73 wins, countless player signings, and two Super Bowl trips. With a resume such as this, it is not hard to understand why this deal will make Elway the highest paid GM in the league if the rumors are true.
