The Broncos made a few moves on the offensive line this morning and have started to shift things around with the remaining players on the roster.
In somewhat of a surprising move the Broncos traded tackle Chris Clark to the Houston Texans for a late round draft pick. After practice Gary Kubiak said this move was made in part of second year tackle Michael Schofield‘s play. “We think Michael has done a good job so we moved on from there (Clark). We’ve given Michael every chance to be our swing guy and he’s done a good job so that’s important.”
Tackle isn’t the only position that may look a little different from a depth standpoint as the team started working rookie Max Garcia to get in the mix at center. “Max is playing a little center, we know he’s done that” Kubiak said. “He did that at Florida for four years and we’re starting to get close to how we’re going to swing on game day. How many guys we’re going to have up, seven is what you’d like to play with. There’s some important things that have to happen so we got some work there today.”
Kubiak brings up seven as the number of active offensive lineman the Broncos may feature on game days. The starting five is still projected to be as follows; LT Sambrailo LG Mathis C Paradis RG Vasquez RT Harris.
That would leave Schofield to be the “swing” for either tackle position and then one spot for an interior lineman. Max Garcia may have a leg up on guys like Gino Gradkowski and Ben Garland for the simple fact of his versatility. Garcia may be able to plug into any of the five offensive line positions at any given time while Gradkowski and Garland really only fit into their respective listed positions of center and guard.
Denver still has to make four more cuts before tomorrows deadline to trim the roster to 75 players. Im sure the Broncos are hoping that the music will eventually stop in this game of musical chairs it has been playing with the offensive line and will instead find consistency in the players they keep.
