David Dahl reflects on first hit, MLB debut

David Dahl‘s first day in the majors was like many before him, a restless night, a crazy day of travel and the proud moment of hearing your name announced in front of thousands of fans. The Colorado Rockies top outfield prospect received the news he’s been waiting to hear for 20-plus years when Albuquerque Isotopes Manger Glenallen Hill relayed the information to Dahl prior to the Triple-A game Sunday.

“Really tired, I didn’t sleep at all last night,” Dahl told reporters after his debut. ” I was at the airport at 3:30 morning. Very tired, but very exciting.”

Not only did Dahl receiving a nice ovation from the opposing Baltimore Orioles fans, he collected his first MLB hit in his third career at-bat. In his first two trips to the plate the left-handed hitter struck out, and it was evident that he was a bit nervous.

“I was very anxious, very excited,” Dahl said. “It was a great atmosphere, I’m just glad to get my first game out of the way. Unfortunately, we didn’t come away with the win.”

After two at-bats of chasing, Dahl settled down and displayed to the fans why he belonged on the team.

“I was chasing that high pitch a little bit tonight,” Dahl described. “I was anxious and nervous. Trying to settle down, and see the ball down. I got to two strikes, I told myself I was gonna battle, fortunately, I got a hit then got to second base and score a run.”

Dahl, who hit .484 in 16 games in Triple-A, is supposed to add consistency to the left field spot that has been revolving door since Gerardo Parra got injured. Originally drafted in the 10th overall by the Rockies in 2012 out of Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham, AL his family was there to see the highly-touted prospect make his debut.

“As the game went I felt a lot more comfortable,” Dahl stated. “Just seeing pitches and get my body going again after traveling all day.”

While one game is no indication of the player Dahl is or the player the Rockies expect him to be one milestone was accomplished for Dahl on Monday. Now, the outfielder needs to put his skill to use as the club needs him to perform before there Wildcard hopes fade.

“I was just going out there and try to live in the moment and have fun,” Dahl said. “It was awesome.”
