DENVER – David Dahl, the Colorado Rockies slugging sophomore left fielder who had a captivating second half in 2016, has been placed on the 7-day disabled list. If seven days sounds odd to you in terms of a DL it’s because you can only hit the 7-day DL in the majors with a concussion, however, in the minors, this is the only version of the non-emergency DL.
Dahl was likely going to be the club’s starting left fielder this year after beginning his big league career with a record-tying 17-game hit streak and hitting .315/.359/.500 in his first season. He nailed seven homers and 24 RBI in the first 63 games of his MLB career.
The one-time top Rockies prospect was thought to have a minor injury, a stress reaction in his sixth rib. This injury meant he didn’t even take the field until June, 12 with High-A Lancaster. He continued to rehab at Triple-A Albuquerque, where he was Monday. He had been healthy since being optioned to the Isotopes. That was until he left Monday’s game early and was not in the lineup Tuesday for the Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate.
The Rockies were viewing this extended stay with Triple-A as somewhat of a spring training for the 23-year-old lefty, as he had barely had one this season. In 19 games between the two levels, he’s had a combined OPS of .751 while playing all three outfield spots.
Dahl has been plagued by injury issues in points during his career including a 2015 collision that forced him to remove his spleen.
Back spasms have reappeared for him and it’s connected to the same injury which has completed derailed Dahl’s 2017.
