Through the haze: Fourth of July weekend recap

First and foremost, happy Fourth of July holiday to all of our BSNBuffs.com readers! We know the offseason can be long and, at times, arduous, but we’re more than thrilled that you all choose to spend part of it with us.

Now, before you fire up the grill today, open up that 30-rack of beer, and get to watching things blow up in the sky, we thought we’d catch you up on what has been an eventful weekend in Boulder and for the Colorado Buffaloes.

And Boulder has a loooooooooot of hippies…

Dead Heads, recreational botanists, and others invaded Boulder over the weekend for the return of live music to Folsom Field. Dead and Company, a group dedicated to recreating the Grateful Dead’s music led by Bob Weir and John Mayer, held two concerts on CU’s campus this weekend, the first such event at Folsom Field since 2001.

Carr hits the road

Mike MacIntyre lost a promising young running back over the weekend as Patrick Carr, a would-be true sophomore, announced that he was transferring from the program to be closer to his family in Texas. Carr rushed for 272 yards on 66 carries as a freshman last season.

As rumblings have hinted towards for a few weeks, Patrick Carr leaving the #CUBuffs.

From BSNBuffs.com assistant editor Jake Shapiro yesterday:

Carr could have had a bright future with the Buffs but the backfield seems crowded, especially with the addition of incoming freshman Beau Bisharat. Along with the 6-foot-2, 210-pound four-star recruit CU has Juniors Michael Adkins II, Phillip Lindsay and Donovan Lee. Adkins has rushed for 1,145 yards in 22 career games, while Lindsay has 1,044 yards in 25 games. Lee was moved from wide receiver into the backfield last year he gained 286 yards on 49 carries.

While losing Carr can’t be looked at as a positive, there’s no doubting that if the Buffs were going to lose someone at a position, running back was where they could afford it.

Wright makes the…right…choice

Former four-star recruit and Missouri Tigers wing Namon Wright committed to Tad Boyle and the Buffaloes over offers from Oregon and UNLV on Sunday afternoon.

Colorado’s staff saw Wright as a guy who fits their mold of long, athletic guard. They see a lot of tools to work with in Namon.

Wright will have to sit out next season in preparation for his return in 2017-18, where he’ll have two years of eligibility remaining. He’s the latest in a string of impact transfers landed by Boyle.

First, there was Carlon Brown, who helped Colorado win a Pac-12 Tournament championship and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player in the process. Sabatino Chen also enjoyed plenty of success with the program, while Josh Fortune averaged 10.3 points per game last season after coming in from Providence. Derrick White, a transfer from UCCS, becomes eligible next season.

Schedule all squaded up

This wasn’t over the weekend, but the school announced several future schedule notes on June 24. Included will be games against two former rival programs.

From the release:

The Buffaloes and Kansas State have agreed to a home-and-home series later next decade, as the Wildcats will travel to Boulder on Sept. 18, 2027, with CU returning the game in Manhattan on Sept. 16, 2028.  Former conference rivals dating back to 1948 when Colorado joined the then-Big 7 Conference, the schools played 66 games against one another, with CU leading the series, 45-20-1.  The last meeting in 2010, prior to when the Buffs left to join the Pac-12 Conference, was a true barn-burner as CU escaped with a 44-36 home win, the highest scoring game in the series.

In 2020, Colorado and Air Force will renew their rivalry that has been on a 45 year hiatus.
