On Sunday, we showed you the physical altercation between Mike MacIntyre and Joe Tumpkin on the sidelines of the Oregon game, yesterday we relayed Joe Tumpkin’s message that he felt MacIntyre was in the right and he was in the wrong, today, MacIntyre tied the knot on the situation by offering his apologies and explaining what exactly happened.
Here’s what he had to say:
“I wanted to just say something really quick about the incident, because I know some people have talked about it.
First of all, it’s unfortunate the way to was handled, that’s not who I am, that’s not who my character is.
This is exactly what happened in the game – after the play was over, Ryan Moeller got slammed to the ground, literally, late. So I went up the the official, I asked the official, ‘Are y’all going to call that?’ He goes, ‘Coach, you better get your coaches off the field or I’m going to throw a penalty.’ I turned, I saw some of our coaches on the field, I got Joe and pushed him over off, then I turned around and saw the flag, I turned around and said, ‘Joe, you just got us a 15-yard penalty.’ I was intense at the moment, we’re in the heat of a battle, I will not handle it that way again.
Later on, the official that threw the flag came up to me during the game and said, ‘Coach, you’ve gotta make sure you keep your coaches off the field or I’ll throw another flag.’ I’ve gotta do a better job of our coaches controlling themselves and me controlling myself. I’m sorry for the way it was handled, Joe and I are fine, there are no issues there whatsoever, and that’s something that will not happen again. That’s exactly what happened, why it happened and what went on.”
