CSU vs. UTSA - Keys to the game for the Rams

FORT COLLINS – With the taste of 44-7 still in their mouths, the Rams could use a dominating performance on all sides of the ball when they welcome in UTSA.

With that in mind, we look at the five keys to the game against the Roadrunners:

How does Faton Bauta respond to being named the starting quarterback?

Bauta did some nice things against CU in mop-up time and head coach Mike Bobo likes his demeanor on the field. Look for Bobo to give the University of Georgia transfer some quick, easy throws early on to get the offense into a much-needed rhythm. Keep in mind also that Bauta is much more of a dual-threat quarterback than Nick Stevens. That brings play-action, bootleg and other creativity more so into play.

Will the offensive line have a bounce-back performance?

What was touted as a major strength headed into the season turned out to be a major issue for the Rams against CU. Eyes will be on junior Trae Moxley, who will start at left tackle.

Can the Rams sustain long drives?

Week 1 was disastrous for the offense, as five straight three-and-outs gave CU prime field position. Bobo said Monday that he needs to be more aggressive with play calling so they don’t have to be “perfect” on third down.

What kind of step forward, if any, will the young Rams defensive line take from Week 1 to Week 2?

Bobo and defensive coordinator Marty English echoed that this group played hard, but needs to play smarter. While maintaining gap assignments takes time, keeping UTSA quarterback Dalton Sturm in check will be no easy task.

Will the CSU secondary be more impactful this week?

English said he wants this group to not be as timid on the perimeter and play fast. And will we see Kevin Nutt start at left cornerback ahead of senior Jordon Vaden?
