The NFL Draft begins on Thursday evening, and while neither of Colorado State football’s two biggest prospects are likely to have their name called that night, both Ty Sambrailo and Garrett Grayson should be expecting to be selected at some point this weekend.
Grayson has delighted scouts since his final game as the Rams quarterback; he went 8-15 for 118 yards in the Senior Bowl, impressed at his Pro Day and earned high praise from Jon Gruden. Gruden recently called Grayson the third-best quarterback in this Draft, and he should know considering he’s worked with the CSU QB on his Gruden’s QB Camp.
NFL scouts like his use of the lower body to help strengthen his throws, love the touch on his deep passes and that he worked from the shotgun, under center and in the pistol at Colorado State. They don’t love Grayson’s locking in on receivers, his slow processing to go through reads and say he needs to improve decision-making skills. He’s projected as a fourth or fifth round pick currently.
Sambrailo is an incredibly versatile offensive lineman who played every position in the trenches besides center during his four years with the Rams. Of course, he was mostly utilized as the left tackle and is a better than average pass-blocker. His pluses are being technically sound with his footwork to maintain balance as well as his hand position. Scouts love that Sambrailo plays to the whistle and has an edge about him. He needs to work on his run-blocking, though, including understanding where to be and when. He’s being projected to go in the third or fourth round.
So, which teams have Sambrailo and Grayson met with? (These were first found by us on Mountain West Connection.)
Garrett Grayson: Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, St. Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers.
Ty Sambrailo: Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Imagine if Grayson and Sambrailo were both picked by the Bills or Chargers and were able to reunite on the field.
Of course, they would likely say they don’t care where they’re drafted, just that they’re drafted. We’ll soon know by whom.
