The CSU basketball team has hired assistant coach Jase Herl to Larry Eustachy’s coaching staff according to the Coloradoan’s Matt Stephens.
Herl most recently spent one year on the South Plains College staff in Levelland, Texas. Under head coach Steve Green, SPC finished the 2015-16 season with a 21-9 record. Herl has a direct connection with the Rams most recent signee Che Bob, a combo guard that averaged 15.5 points and 8 rebounds a game as a freshman at SPC.
Along with the hiring of Herl, long time assistant coach Steve Barnes is being promoted to Leonard Perry’s old position of associate head coach, and Willie Glover is being promoted from director of player development to assistant coach.
“I am really excited about Jase joining our staff,” Eustachy said in a press release. “He wants to be a head coach and he has been getting after it in his career. I have known him for several years and feel like he will be a great fit for our program, as he has shown he can recruit quality talent as well as then help them improve on the court.”
Prior to his time at South Plains, Herl was the head coach at Northwest Technical College in Goodland, Kansas. In three seasons Herl saw a lot of success at the Northwest Technical College, including a 20-win season in 2014-15. The program also sent five players to Division 1 teams, including the first in program history, senior guard Gian Clavell.
CSU will not be the first Colorado university that Herl has been at. Herl played his senior season in 2009 at Colorado Mesa University, and spent the 2010-11 season as an assistant coach under head coach Jim Heaps at CMU.
Barnes will be in his fifth season with CSU and has 31 years of collegiate coaching experience. Barnes has a longstanding relationship with head coach Larry Eustachy that dates back to the 1970’s, and has coached with him at Utah State, Iowa State and Southern Mississippi in the past.
Glover will be entering his fourth season with Colorado State basketball, having spent the last three seasons as director of player development. Glover also has deep roots with Eustachy, as he spent four seasons on his Southern Mississippi staff before coming to Fort Collins.
“With Steve and Willie, I have always been about loyalty and advancing those people, and both of those have been very loyal to me and the program,” Eustachy said on the promotions of two assistants. “I learned from Joe Parker, our AD, to not be hasty and I think I have done that here and we are in a great place moving forward. I’ve never felt better about a staff and, despite how it appears, I have never felt better about advancement of the program. I go back to the expectations and I love that our fans are so involved and that 18 wins is not good enough any more at Colorado State.”
The hiring of Herl and the promotions of Glover and Barnes brings stability to the program. With John Gillon transferring, the de-commitment of Leon Gillmore III, and the loss of assistant coaches Ross Hodge and Leonard Perry, this program needed some good news.
Herl and Barnes are both revered recruiters and Glover has spent the lasts even years on Eustachy’s staffs. Things are once again looking up in Fort Collins. These are excellent moves by a program trying to grow.
