When you think of golf courses with the most shoreline of any course in the US, where do you think they are located?

A-California

B-Florida

C-Colorado

If you guessed C here, you would be correct. Located just over an hour north of downtown Denver sits the golf course with the most shoreline of any course in America- Pelican Lakes Golf Club. Don’t let that intimidate you though, this track is one of the most fun layouts in all of northern Colorado.

Let’s start off with playability- this is one of the most underrated layouts in the entire state. This track has wide variety of different holes to keep you on your toes for all 18 holes. As we previously mentioned, there is no shortage of water hazards lining this course, but luckily a fair amount of it doesn’t end up coming into play. There is also a nice variety of distances hole to hole, all the way from drivable par 4s up to long, three-shot par 5’s. Overall, this course is a blast to play and gets a 5 flag rating in the playability category.

When it comes to difficulty out at Pelican Lakes, you can somewhat make it as easy or as hard as you want. It definitely puts a premium on accuracy but depending on how aggressive you are, there is more generous areas of fairway to be found if you are willing to lay back a little more. The greens have a decent amount of undulation but are not unfair by any means. The course finishes up with two great holes- a shore-lined par 3 17th, and a visually intimidating 18th that features the Poudre River lining the entire front portion of the green. This course gets a 4 flag rating from us in the difficulty category.

The views out at Pelican Lakes are very unique for the state of Colorado. There is not much in the way of mountain views but some of the views of the water are definitely photo worthy. If you didn’t know any better you would think you were somewhere in Florida or California when you play Pelican. Overall, we give the views at Pelican Lakes a modest 3 flags.

Another great thing about Pelican Lakes is the course is always in great shape. As we mentioned a million times earlier in this post, there is no shortage of water in this area of Colorado. That means the course hardly ever has to go without water during the summer, which we all know is a hot commodity in this state come August. On top of the fairways and rough always being lush and green, the putting surfaces are always pure and roll true. The course conditions get a solid 4 flags from us.

The practice facilities out at Pelican are very similar to the rest of the property- very lush and well maintained. There is a par 34 9 hole “Pelican Falls” course which has one of the most unique greens in Colorado surrounded by the states largest man made water feature. The driving range and the chipping green are both good sized and stay true to the course conditions. The putting green is always good and stays consistent with the the green speeds out on the course. The clubhouse is very on brand with the property and has a great balcony area that overlooks the entire course. If you are able to catch a sunset out there you won’t be disappointed. The facilities get another solid 4 flag rating.

Now we get to the deciding factor for most- the value. Pelican Lakes is fairly unique in the way of pricing because the green fees do not change from weekday to weekend. Having said that, if you play anytime before 2 o’clock during peak season, the max you will pay is $99 to ride 18 holes. We think this is pretty fair considering it is somewhat of a destination course and it receives yet another 4 flag rating.

Overall, Pelican Lakes is a great test of golf for all skill levels to enjoy. Hop on I-25 north and you’ll be there before you know it.
