When you think of Colorado, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it the Broncos? The beautiful sunset? The legal electric lettuce? For most, the first image that pops into their head is the views of the majestic Rocky mountains. People come from far and wide to catch a glimpse of these beautiful mountain peaks, and there are few better places in the state to do this than the town of Breckenridge, which is also home the phenomenal Breckenridge Brewery- the best beer around. In the town of Breckenridge sits 27 holes of Jack Nicklaus designed golf which happens to be Big Drive Mitch’s favorite mountain layout in Colorado. Today we are going to give you some insight into the well renowned Breckenridge Golf Club.

We will get the most obvious topic out of the way first; The amazing views. Breck Golf Club is our first course to receive a 5+ flag review in any category and we do not take those lightly. From the water features scattered throughout the property to the 360 degree views of snow covered peaks, there is not much to dislike about the visuals this place offers. One of our favorite holes on the course is the 9th hole on the Beaver 9 (pictured below). Playing 200 yards from the tips with a shallow and well protected green, this hole is equally challenging in beautiful. Overall, there are not many public courses in the Colorado mountains that provide views like Breck GC.

The difficulty at Breckenridge Golf Club earned a 4 flag review from us but could easily be 5 flags depending on the day. The fairways are relatively narrow and the course does force you to shape shots a certain way on a few of the holes. The course is also not short on sand traps that almost always come into play in the fairway and around the green. One of our favorite aspects of this course is you can get all the amazing views of the mountains without the billy goat style of play. For the location, there is not a significant amount of elevation change and it really makes for a solid, true test of golf. On top of that, the greens are no walk in the park either.

Mountain courses are tough to judge when it comes to the conditions department. These tracks generally see a lot more harsh weather than your average course and are only open for about five months out of the year. This also poses a huge challenge for the maintenance crew to get the course in great condition in a short amount of time. Having said that, the staff always does an amazing job of keeping all 27 holes in great shape whenever they are open. We give the course conditions here a solid 4 flags.

The value at Breckenridge is one of its only pitfalls in our opinion. If you want to play all 27 holes with a cart, it’s going to set you back $196 (insert cringe emoji here). That being said, a lot of times you get what you pay for, and what you get here in a world class golf course with breathtaking views. As we have said before, places like this are not somewhere most people can go on a weekly basis, but it’s definitely worth a drive up the mountain at least once a year.

The facilities out at Breckenridge are nothing to write home about but still earnest a modest 3 flags from us. This facility is all about playing golf and less about hanging out at the bar drinking. The clubhouse is relatively small and with limited space available, the practice facilities are not massive either. In the grand scheme of things this is not a huge setback considering this is a destination golf course so you’re most likely going there to actually play golf, not just hang out and practice.

All in all, we hold Breckenridge in high regard when it comes to mountain golf in Colorado. You will be happy you made the drive.
