After teammate Rashard Higgins was selected at the end of the fifth round, linebacker Cory James was selected with the 197th overall pick in the sixth round by the Oakland Raiders.
“I’m very proud of Cory James,” Rams head coach Mike Bobo said in a statement. “He is a talented player who can play in the NFL. Cory has great explosion off the line of scrimmage and is not afraid.”

James is a natural edge rusher and was one of the best pass rushers in the history of the Colorado State football. For most of James’ collegiate career, he specialized as a pass-rusher, but he also showed the ability to play the run well. Specifically, when he switched to an inside linebacker role his senior season. As a senior, James recorded a career-high 65 tackles and played a key role in the Colorado State defense.
“Versatility at the linebacker position,” ESPN analyst Mel Kiper said. “He made a lot of plays and was the impact player for the Rams.”

James was a consistent presence in the Ram defenses throughout his time at CSU, and could develop into a fine player in Oakland. Head coach Jack Del Rio helped develop former Ram Shaquil Barrett when he was in Denver, and he could do the same with James in Oakland.
