Colorado Ultimate Team Standings: Rockies not the worst team in town?

 

ESPN the magazine released their annual “Ultimate Team Standings” – a ranking of every team in the four major sports, today and despite many thinking Denver a “Sports Town”, the local organizations didn’t fare well.

Here’s how the Denver teams fared among the 122 organizations ranked.

#20 DENVER BRONCOS (5th in NFL)

Denver’s legacy of winning continues in this year’s Ultimate Standings and, once more, on the field. Since 1984, after all, no team in the NFL has had fewer losing seasons than the Broncos (five). How much longer they can maintain that reputation is the question.

Broncos again prove their supremacy atop the Denver sports mountain.

#51 Colorado Avalanche (14th in NHL)

The momentum from the 2013 hiring of Hall of Famer Patrick Roy and subsequent division title and playoff run is gone for the Avalanche. Colorado dropped from No. 16 overall down to 51st — this after an Ultimate Standings-record 85-place jump from 2013 to 2014. The Avs dropped in all eight categories in a decline that reflected the fall they took in the standings last season.

Interesting that the Avalanche, who missed the playoffs all together in 2014-15, has better “Title track” rankings than the big brother that is the Denver Broncos.

#110 Colorado Rockies (29th in MLB)

This year’s standings show fans don’t have a lot of faith in the Rockies’ title chances — or trust in many of their stakeholders. Even worse? Voting was completed before that controversial Troy Tulowitzki trade. Rockies fans’ frustrations run the gamut — the club ranked last in all of sports in categories including “demonstrates a commitment to winning” and “showing appreciation to the fans.” In the end, the Rockies were voted the second-to-last franchise in MLB (ahead of only the Phillies) and have work to do before next year’s vote.

No surprise to see the Rockies ranked DEAD last in “Title track”, but how are they not the worst team in Denver?

#119 Denver Nuggets (29th in NBA)

The Nuggets are bottom-dwellers this year, ranked the second-worst franchise in the NBA (ahead of only the lowly Knicks) and the third-worst franchise in all of pro sports. Not an enviable spot, especially since Denver’s other pro sports franchise ranks in the top 20 (hat tip, Peyton Manning).

Not sure that I agree with this one. If anything Id say the Nuggets are on their way back up with a new identity waiting to be established at Pepsi Center. At least they beat the Knicks.
