Tough break for Colorado State Rams Men’s basketball.
According to the team, leading scorer Gian Clavell broke his non-shooting hand in practice on Thursday and will not play today as the Rams are in Wichita, Kansas and gearing up to play the Kansas State Wildcats.
In fact, he’s done for the season.
It’s a huge blow to the team; Clavell was averaging a No. 2 in the Mountain West 20.8 points per game, leading the Rams with 27 3-pointers and also scored 35 points in the double overtime loss to UTEP.
Clavell is not only the Rams No. 1 scorer, he’s one of their leaders. Following the win over Arkansas-Fort Smith, Clavell told me he was trying to take on a leadership role with the team. It was obvious in that game, as Clavell not only was more vocal than ever before, but he also tried to lead by example by playing with extra effort on the defensive end.
For Larry Eustachy’s Rams, it confounds another problem as well; a lack of depth. While CSU tries to tout depth, they regularly play 7-9 players a game. Clavell was leading the team with 35-plus minutes on the floor average per game, meaning now others will have to step up.
CSU is currently 6-4 and their game against the 7-2 Wildcats just tipped off in Wichita, Kansas. Watch on WatchESPN.com or listen on 105.5 FM.
