Colorado State WR Elroy Masters selected for NCAA Leadership Forum

Colorado State wide receiver Elroy Masters has been selected to participate in an NCAA Leadership Forum, which is currently ongoing, from April 7-10 in Phoenix, AZ.

Out of the more than 200 student-athletes selected, just two were chosen from the Mountain West. There is a wide range when considering the pool of participants, representing all sports and various campus academic departments.

Masters, who is a business administration major with a 3.55 grade-point average, is the vice president of CSU’s SAAC chapter. Along with his prominent role in the SAAC, Masters participates in several diversity and leadership programs on-campus.

In a statement released on the official NCAA site, the mission of the conference is the following:

“The Student-Athlete Leadership Forum is an excellent way to provide student-athletes with a nontraditional form of education that centers on developing them as leaders in their communities and on their campuses,” said Curtis J. Hollomon, NCAA director of leadership development. “It ultimately prepares them for life after their collegiate playing days are over.”

Over the three-day period, the student-athletes will be separated into groups for various projects and discussions, and will be led by 20 facilitators that were selected by the membership committee.

Attendees will listen to and have a chance to engage with keynote speakers LaChina Robinson, current women’s basketball TV analyst, and Justin Patton, who is a certified body language and communications skills coach.

During the event, the student-athletes will be educated on the NCAA governance structure, as well as how the committees come together to make membership decisions. Participants will also be taught about the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, whose purpose to give student-athletes a voice within the NCAA governance structure.

Lastly, the student-athletes will participate in a local community service project benefitting Helen’s Hope Chest, Child Crisis Arizona and the local school children in Phoenix.  

The forum will be a homecoming of sorts for Masters, who is from Peoria, AZ, where he attended Sunrise Mountain high school. In two seasons, Masters has seen a limited role in the CSU offense.

After redshirting his freshman year (2013),  Masters caught 10 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown in 2014.Masters’ redshirt sophomore campaign was cut short due to a shoulder injury, resulting in him missing the entire second half of the 2015 season. In four games, Masters three passes for 35 yards.

Now with three years under his belt, combined with his off-field intelligence and the skills he will be learning at the forum, Masters could definitely be one of the leaders in the locker room this season.
