The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have agreed to term on a Minor League contract with former Philadelphia Phillies great, Ryan Howard.

Howard was the National League’s MVP in 2006 and was an All-Star that season as well as in 2009 and 2010. He was also the MVP of the 2009 NLCS.

Famously, Howard was signed to a massive contract by the Phillies after so much success and began to decline almost immediately. Also famously, Howard almost single-handedly beat the Rockies in the 2009 NLDS.

It is unclear at this time what role Howard will be asked to fill, but most likely he may be called upon when the rosters expand in September to be used as a pinch-hitter should he show himself to have any signs of life back in that once legendary bat.

The 37-year-old hit .196 last season over 112 games for the Phillies but did manage to smack 25 home runs. He was struggling with the Atlanta Braves Triple-A affiliate with a .184 batting average over 11 games before being released.
