Denver — The Colorado Rockies have signed first-round draft pick Riley Pint, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman. Heyman’s first reported the news on his Twitter account:
rockies have deal with riley pint, No. 4 pick overall, rhp out of KC area who throws 100 mph. $4.8M deal, pending physical

More and more signing news should tart to pour in soon now that the fireballer out of Overland Park, Kansas has been inked by the Rockies. $4.8 million is also the exact same number as the signing bonus that the Rockies handed out to Jon Gray — the third overall pick in the 2013 draft. Both players signed for “under slot” or less than what is typical of their draft position, allowing the Rockies to spend a little more on other picks.
Like Gray, Pint is known for his dominant fastball but unlike Gray, Pint comes straight out of high school and may require a longer development plan. It will be interesting to see how the Rockies handle the youngster, knowing the big league club could be on the verge of competing but not wanting to end up with another situation where a pitcher in their system can never reach his potential because he was rushed.
And so … the saga of Riley Pint begins. Watch this space.
