After an incredibly frustrating extra-inning loss in the series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Colorado Rockies absolutely dominated the visitors in the second game.
Behind a phenomenal performance from their starting pitcher and more offense from the non-stars of the team, the home club emerged with easily their most dominant and complete win of the season.
Player of the Game: Antonio Senzatela – 8 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 K
Senzatela was fantastic all night and incredibly efficient. He dotted the edges of the strike zone with his fastball, breaking pitches, and off-speed, producing countless defensive swings from the Snakes.
He gave up just four hits, only two of them for extra-bases and both of those were doubles. He kept the scoreboard clean and never allowed the semblance of a rally. He was calm, cool, and collected all night and at 96 pitches thrown in the game, he arguably could have gone for the complete game shutout.
Along with Julio Urias of the Dodgers, it was the best pitching performance at Coors Field so far in 2021.
It was arguably the best start in the still-young career of Antonio Senzatela.
The Bats
Chris Owings went 3-for-3 with a triple, two doubles, a pair of RBI, and a run scored. He left the game with a sore leg, probably from all the running around the bases, leaving the game with his season batting average at an even .500.
Garrett Hampson continues to put together fantastic, grind-em-out at-bats and was able to produce a couple of hits and a couple of walks. He scored three runs and stole three bases, having a fourth erased on an Owings foul ball.
C.J. Cron and Josh Fuentes also both came up with big two-out RBI hits to provide Colorado with some insurance runs.
Sam Hilliard, who replaced Owings in the middle of the game, added a two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth to give the Rockies an 8-0 lead.
Jordan Sheffield pitched the only necessary inning of relief and did allow runners at the corners with one out (after a dropped third strike) but managed to wriggle out of that and preserve the shutout.
What’s Next
The winner of this series will be decided in a Thursday afternoon affair.
Jon Gray, who was cruising against the Dodgers until experiencing full-body cramps last time out, will make his second start of the season.
First pitch at 1:10 MT.
