Colorado Rockies recall Jordan Lyles, option Scott Oberg to Triple-A

The Colorado Rockies have added Jordan Lyles back to their MLB roster, presumably to work as a long reliever or spot starter. Scott Oberg, who was only up long enough to pitch two clean innings yesterday, was sent back down to Triple-A Albuquerque.

While Oberg might have been the obvious choice to send down, he wasn’t the only one. The young Miguel Castro has struggled ever since returning from injury early in the season and was victimized again yesterday by a monster home run off the bat of Marcel Ozuna. Castro is still only 21 and has potential oozing out of his eyes, it might have made better long term sense to allow him a chance to get things turned around down at Triple-A. But it’s also not like Oberg has demanded a spot, so it’s hard to get overly analytical on this one.

Tyler Chatwood’s recent injury has begun quite the shuffle in the Rockies rotation, though his stint is expected to be a short one which makes most of these roster moves fluid and temporary. Had his injury been more significant, it might make sense for the club to look at more exciting options (Jeff Hoffman) but that isn’t something you do for a short-term fix. The Rockies don’t want to call up Hoffman until they believe he can stick at the MLB level.
