The Colorado Rockies announced on Friday that pitcher Eddie Butler and catcher Tom Murphy have been reassigned to Minor League camp. Both players were longshots to make the roster out of spring training but certainly it was not a foregone conclusion one way or the other.
The Rockies have said they would like to see Butler improve on finishing innings but have still been encouraged by the signs of progress he has already shown.
Murphy got lost in a numbers game against more experienced players in Nick Hundley, Dustin Garneau and Jackson Williams. The emergence of Tony Wolters as a legitimate option behind the dish also makes it difficult to get Murphy the playing time the Rockies believe he deserves.
Rockies fans should still expect to see both players at Coors Field at some point in 2016.
