Earlier on Monday, we wrote that Ryan McMahon had won the Eastern League’s award for Player of the Week. Now it has announced that right-handed starter Yency Almonte will join him in the weekly honors. He has been named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week.
With the club in their second year of existence, the two became the first Hartford Yard Goats to sweep the Eastern League’s Weekly Award Honors
Almonte made one this week on Thursday night. He faced off against the visiting Harrisburg Senators and tallied seven shutout innings in Hartford’s 1-0 victory. Almonte allowed just four hits and finished with a franchise-best 10 strikeouts with no walks surrendered. His win was the first for the Yard Goats in their brand new Dunkin’ Donuts Park.
Almonte improved his record to 1-0 and now has an ERA of 1.53 in his three starts for the Yard Goats this season. He also has 21 strikeouts over 17.2 innings pitched. The 22-year old was acquired by the Colorado Rockies in a trade from the Chicago White Sox for Tommy Kahnle.
