DENVER – Colorado Rockies infield prospect Ryan McMahon has been named the Easter League Player of the Week.

It’s been an interesting year for McMahon. This time a year ago, he was learning to play first base for the first time and now the Rockies have him getting some reps in at second, something we frankly did not anticipate. Despite a disappointing season (statistically) a year ago and a down spring training, McMahon remains very much at the top of the list of Rockies prospects who have extraordinary potential.

The effort to have him learn as many positions as possible suggest the Rockies see McMahon fulfilling that potential eventually. He fell down some prospect lists last season, but that always felt a bit premature to us at BSN Denver given McMahon’s age and intangibles.

Through 16 games so far this season back with Double-A Hartford, he is batting .391/.446/.688 with three home runs and 18 RBI. That’s good for a 210 wrc+ in what is known as a pitching league, especially before it really warms up in the summer time. McMahon also has a pair of stolen bases without being caught.

Ryan McMahon joined the BSN Rockies podcast just before embarking on his 2017 campaign where he talked about all the ways he managed to grow his game a year ago and gave a ton of insight into why his numbers have gone from what they were to what they are now. Still just 22-years-old, he has responded to his one down season as a pro by bouncing back and having about as strong a start to 2017 as possible.

If he continues this trend, we could eventually see him go the route of David Dahl and Raimel Tapia, both of whom had to repeat Double-A before really finding themselves and quickly catapulting to MLB. Come September, don’t be shocked if his name is in the mix for potential power bats to add to the Colorado Rockies bench.
