Denver — The Colorado Rockies have placed left-handed pitcher Chris Rusin on the 15-day Disabled List with a “left shoulder strain.” In a corresponding move, the club has recalled rookie right-hander Miguel Castro from Triple-A Albuquerque.
This news answers part of the question about what the Rockies were going to do after Tyler Anderson’s excellent debut and the announcement that Jorge De La Rosa would be returning to the rotation. With Rusin moving to the DL, Anderson slides into his spot for now with Eddie Butler staying in the bullpen.
Rusin has performed admirably, if not spectacularly, in both spot starts and appearances out of the bullpen in 2016. In over 54 innings pitched, his ERA of 4.12 is perfectly acceptable for a guy who pitches half of his games at Coors Field, and his 3.21 FIP suggest he even caught a few tough breaks. His final start in Los Angeles against the Dodgers showed what Rusin can be at his best, tossing six innings of shutout baseball and allowing only three hits.
Castro showed signs of dominance early before being sidelined by an injury himself. He struggled in his return and was demoted back to Triple-A but has righted the ship a bit, earning the call back up. His ERA at the MLB level this season sits at 3.75, he has struck out ten batters in 12 innings.
