Matzek has struggled with anxiety and has left the team several times to sort out his issues. Now the team has not given up on him or else they would have released him, this move however does clear a 40-man roster spot leaving the Rockies with 39 players on their secondary roster. Since Matzek has already been outrighted it means he has cleared waivers and will remain part of the organization, pitching for the Modesto Nuts.
He has just started pitched more than one inning at a time at the High-A level and this year in 10 innings in the minor leagues he has allowed just two earned runs on six hits and seven walks. But he has also struck out 14 in that time. His future is very cloudy, but for now he is a Rockie still.
